CASTLEGAR BC – A 160-hectare wildfire that’s burning about 20 kilometres southwest of Salmo and south of the Salmo River has prompted the Regional District of Central Kootenay to issue an evacuation alert & order for the McCormick Creek area.

The Evacuation Alert still remains in place due to a wildfire in the area of McCormick Creek/Pend D’Oreille, 20 kilometres southwest of Salmo. See attached map.
RDCK will be in close contact with BC Wildfire to receive updates on progress and any fire growth. At this time visibility is limited which is preventing any detailed assessment of the fire at this time but BC Wildfire has confirmed that it still remains on the south side of the Salmo River.
Aug 9 – This fire started near McCormick Creek, east of Pend D’Oreille River, on the evening of Aug. 8, 2017. It is burning in steep terrain close to power lines and is exhibiting aggressive fire behaviour. Due to potential safety risks, ground crews were relocated to safer ground, but they continue to work on this fire.
Twenty BC Wildfire Service personnel were fighting this fire with the aid of four helicopters, airtankers and heavy equipment.
As a precautionary measure, the Regional District of Central Kootenay issued an evacuation alert on Aug. 9, 2017. For more information about this alert, people should call 250 352-7701 or visit the district’s website at www.rdck.ca.

Evacuation Alert – 20 km SW of Salmo, West of Hwy 6

(RDCK RELEASE) – The Regional District of Central Kootenay has issued an Evacuation Alert for the area of McCormick Creek, 20 kilometres southwest of Salmo in the Pend d’Oreille area west of Highway 6 due to a wildfire. See attached map provided.
The wildfire started on August 8 and has grown to an estimated 75 hectares in size as of Aug 9.
Under an Evacuation Alert, residents and visitors should be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. It is recommended to prepare a 72 hour Grab & Go Kit and ensure preparedness in the event that the situation worsens, and an evacuation order is enforced.
Although there are only 23 residential properties on alert, the RDCK is aware that the Shambhala Festival could be threatened by further expansion of this fire. At this time, the Shambhala Music Festival is not under any Evacuation Alert or Evacuation Order.
Shambhala Music Festival could be placed under an Evacuation Alert or Evacuation Order should the fire situation worsen. The RDCK Emergency Operations Centre is currently working with RCMP, BCEHS, MOTI and Shambhala organizers to ensure public safety is maintained in the event of an emergency. Festival goers are encouraged to maintain a designated driver and means of quick evacuation from the area.
The RDCK will provide a further update at 10:00 am tomorrow after consultation with BC Wildfire.

One of B.C.’s biggest outdoor music festivals has issued a “pre-evacuation alert” due to nearby wildfires.
The Shambhala festival near Salmo B.C. issued the notice on Wednesday evening due to an existing evacuation alert near the festival grounds.
On its website, the event says the notice was issued “in the interest of public safety,” and that festival goers should be “prepared for changing conditions,” but that the alert does not affect the festival as of yet. MORE…
