Volunteer teachers needed to assist Nelson women who have experienced violence

There is a new program coming to Nelson BC and it is designed specifically to help women who have experienced domestic violence heal from the traumatic effects.

The program is part of a 5 year joint research project between the BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) and Yoga Outreach, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada and will consist of weekly, onsite trauma-informed yoga classes for women accessing Transition House services.

Yoga Outreach is currently looking for volunteer yoga instructors to provide yoga classes for the program. In order to lead classes volunteers are required to complete Yoga Outreach’s Core Training TM, an 18 hour training that will empower qualified yoga teachers with the skills to build trauma-informed yoga classes for individuals facing multiple barriers, including domestic violence, PTSD, addictions, incarceration, and mental illness.

The next training program will be offered in Nelson BC from September 29 to October 1, 2017.

The experience of violence from an intimate partner is now widely understood as having the potential to cause trauma. The practice of yoga, and in particular trauma-informed yoga, is increasingly being recognized as a valuable practice in supporting the recovery of those who have experienced such violence.

“This project is a huge step towards our goal of removing the barriers of access to yoga for our most vulnerable community members” says Delanie Dyck, Yoga Outreach’s Executive Director.
